About the Artist Octavia Bishop:

Octavia BishopOctavia has worked for us for awhile. Im not sure why, as she has enough talent to stay home and create for a living, I can only think she just likes the company!! Lucky us!! We are very excited to host ART BY OCTAVIA

Continuous creation and new ideas really do it for me. I believe creation is a very powerful thing. I paint in acrylics but also use other mixed media. I enjoy painting things that bring me joy. I've painted while I've been sad, but my work has always come out brighter than my mood. It's very uplifting. Painting has always brought me confidence in myself for it's the one definite hobby I've never given up on. I am inspired by the powerfulness of animals and nature. What animals symbolize. Their texture, fur, and feathers. Their strengths, their freedom, and their personalities. I am driven to create stories from my life, be it a memory or a strong moment I want to remember. In my art, I use many layers of paint with strong colors that I find enchanting. I love to bring a creature to life and create its own uniqueness! My tools are simple paint brushes and palette knives. I have a strong connection with birds, especially owls. They appear to me almost spiritual and I see them often. The sounds of their long-winded calls seem out of the ordinary and almost magic-like. I very much enjoy magical things.

Octavia Bishop's bear"When I was little, nightmares filled my sleep. Sometimes they horrified me for the next couple of days. My dad has hunted the bear for years and would tell me stories of his experiences. He always took my sister and me hiking and would show us footprints of all the animals. He would show us the tree marks made from deer antlers. One story he told me about stuck with me. My dad was walking through the woods and he saw a rabbit infested with ticks. He was able to catch the rabbit and patiently remove all the ticks, most likely saving the rabbit's life. Hearing the story, showed me the kindness and respect my dad had for animals even though he hunted them. I have gained knowledge and appreciation of nature just from watching my dad. He told me he used to have nightmares too. He said one day they will go away. He gave me a dreamcatcher. He gave me a little less fear before bedtime."

You are one lucky person if you get Octavia to paint a wall mural for you. When the pandemic closed us for so long, our SMAC dressing room literally felt abandoned. It broke my heart to see the cob webs and the signs of mice moving in where there once were musicians. So I asked Octavia to paint the walls with something cheery and fresh. She sure stepped up to that task , and added a lotta love to it as well. Now when I go down to the dressing room it makes me hugely smile. As musicians are coming back slowly to perform, they see that we not only survived these last few years, but we thrived with the help of Octavia and her whimsical heart and mind and talent. These videos are beautiful, meditative, and even fun…take a half hour out of your day and watch all of them..it’s good for the soul; and you will get to know our talented Octavia a little better in process.
